How to Clean Your Maytag Washing Machine

Cleaning your clothes, towels, and sheets in your Maytag washing machine is a given, but have you ever cleaned your actual washing machine? Dirt, grime, and soap residue can linger after each and every wash causing bad smells and less than perfectly cleaned clothes. Regular washer cleaning will help continue perfect cleanings, stop odors in their tracks, prohibit mold/bacteria growth, remove dust, and erase marks on the washing machine's surface. Take care of your washing machine by wiping the exterior, cleaning the dispenser, and washing the interior of the washer at least once per month. Now we'll cover exactly how to achieve a spiffy clean washer - and how to keep it that way. This helpful cleaning guide covers all of Maytag's washer models including both top and front-loading washers.

Exterior Wipe Down

Spills happen. Whether it's ketchup on a shirt that dripped on its way being thrown in, dust, dirt, lint, or a detergent spill, keeping the exterior of your washer clean is fast and simple. Use a soft, soapy, microfiber cloth or sponge to remove any residue on the washer. You can remove tougher stains or scuff marks by using a toothbrush. Then, rinse with a cloth and wipe dry. The exterior will stay looking just as new as the day you bought it!

In and Around the Door

Gunk and residue can certainly build up around the door area. Make sure to remove any items that are in the washer before you begin. Open the lid and wipe down the inside glass or metal with affresh® Machine Cleaning Wipes. You may also use a damp, soapy cloth. On front-loading washers make sure to not skip cleaning inside the rubber door seal.

Cleaning the Detergent Dispenser

Detergent and debris can easily collect in the drawer dispenser. Luckily, it's an easy clean. Follow these instructions based on which type of dispenser your Maytag washer model has. Non-removable dispenser: Wipe the opening with a soapy cloth, rinse, and dry.Removable dispenser: Press the release lever located inside of the drawer compartment. Slide drawer out from the washer. Disassemble to remove any inserts. Wash and rinse all parts under warm tap water. Dry and re-assemble. Return to the washer.

"Clean Cycle" Procedure

Maytag washers are specifically designed with a "Clean Washer Cycle" built-in. This helps keep odors at bay and maintains water freshness as well. The clean washer cycle uses higher water volumes combined with affresh® Washing Machine Cleaner tablet or chlorine bleach.

Affresh® Washer Cleaner Method (recommended for best results)

  1. Remove all items in the washing tub.
  2. Add one affresh® tablet to the very bottom of the tub. (Make sure you do not place it in the detergent dispenser!)
  3. Close the door and select the "Clean Washer Cycle".
  4. Touch and hold the Start/Pause button for 3 seconds to begin.
  5. Afterward, run a rinse and spin cycle to ensure the cleaner is rinsed away.
  6. Leave your washer door open afterward to let the tub air dry.

Chlorine Bleach Method (alternative)

  1. Remove all items in the washing tub.
  2. Add 1 cup of liquid chlorine bleach to the bleach dispenser.
  3. Close the door and select the "Clean Washer Cycle".
  4. Touch and hold the Start/Pause button for 3 seconds to begin.
  5. Afterward, run a rinse and spin cycle to ensure bleach is completely rinsed.

Other Helpful Recommendations

  • Always use High-Efficiency detergents and use the correct amount. Using an excessive amount of detergent will accelerate the residue inside of your washer, which may cause unwanted odors more quickly.
  • Leave your washer's door open in between uses to help dry out the washer and prevent odors from occurring.
  • Try NOT to only use cold water when washing your clothes. Using hot and warm temperatures will help slow down how much detergent and soil accumulates.
